Diastasis recti treatment

What Is Diastasis Recti?

Diastasis recti is a common postpartum condition where the left and right sides of the rectus abdominis muscle separate along the midline of the abdomen. This happens naturally during pregnancy as the uterus grows, but in many women the gap does not fully close on its own after birth. It can lead to a visible bulge in the belly, lower back pain, pelvic floor weakness, and a feeling of instability in the core.

How the Manual Closure Works

The manual closure technique is a gentle, hands-on method where I work directly with the connective tissue (linea alba) between the abdominal muscles. Through careful palpation and soft pressure, the technique encourages the tissue to regain tension and the muscles to draw back together. The process is calm, unhurried, and respectful of your body's pace of recovery.

During the session, I'll first assess the width, depth, and tension of the separation. Then, using warm hands and steady, focused movements, I guide the tissue toward closing. Many women describe the experience as deeply relaxing and feel a noticeable difference even after the first session.

What to Expect

Each session lasts approximately 90 minutes, including an initial assessment and time for you to rest afterward. The number of sessions needed varies — some women see significant improvement after one or two visits, while others benefit from a longer course of treatment. I'll give you an honest assessment at your first appointment and may also suggest supportive exercises you can do at home.

For vaginal births, treatment is most beneficial during the postpartum period (šestinedělí) — usually two sessions are sufficient. After a caesarean section, the treatment takes place later — only after the scar has been confirmed healed by the attending physician.

This technique can also help women months or even years after giving birth. It's never too late to address diastasis recti.
